If I were a social media “influencer” and I could choose to be a brand ambassador, I would choose DoTERRA.

I love this company and I love these oils.  I use them in my treatment room, I diffuse in the lobby. I have them in about every room in my house (use it or loose it baby). Basically, I use them ALLOT.  But why this company? Why would I love to be their brand ambassador?

I can credit this company for being the impetus for me getting a in depth aromatherapy certification. I have hundreds of success stories in using their products. One reason for my groupie like love for this company is the way in which they help every day people understand and learn how to use essential oils based products safely in their home.

Every year, I trek out to Salt Lake City for more in depth training. This year, that won’t happen. The good news is that I can to go “virtually” and the even better news is that you can go virtually too!

Would you like to come with me?

You should be able to buy a virtual ticket tomorrow. Can’t wait to post more on this topic, stay tuned.

3 OILS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL SUCCESS Wed, 28 Aug 2019 19:36:26 +0000 By: Heidi Sherwin, Yoga Teacher and Mother of 3

Backpack – check!
Lunch box – check!
Classroom Supplies – check!
Earlier bedtime – hooray! I mean, check!
Essential Oils – hmm, not sure!

Starting a new school year is filled with excitement and anticipation. From gathering school supplies and packable lunch items to making sure kids get to and from school safely, knowing which essential oils kids can use effectively may feel overwhelming.

Simplicity gets an A+ when I am juggling new routines and helping my three daughters prepare for a successful school year. Therefore, my family relies on a few tried and true Honor Roll essential oils to support us during the Back-to-School transition.

Here are 3 favorite oils that my family uses regularly:

Wake-up to the bright aroma and energize the mind! Wild orange promotes a positive mood, supports the immune system, soothes anxious feelings, stimulates digestion, and tastes delicious (good-bye sugary O.J.).

Usage Tips:
• Dilute 1 – 2 drops in lotion or carrier oil and massage on feet, belly, and/or spine to support immune and nervous systems.
• Add 4 drops to a diffuser during breakfast to increase physical and mental energy.
• Add 1 drop to water to boost child’s digestion (great before and after school).

Beat after-school sluggishness and pep up the brain for homework! Peppermint has a cool and refreshing aroma, which stimulates focus and concentration, relaxes tense muscles, opens airways to boost brain power, eases tummy discomfort (especially if there’s a lot of “holding” during school), and blends wonderfully with Wild Orange.

Usage Tips:
• Add 4 drops each of Peppermint and Wild Orange to a diffuser during after-school snacks and homework time.
• Dilute 1 drop in lotion or carrier oil and massage on tense muscles or tummy for digestive support.
• Create a 10ml roller bottle with 5 drops of peppermint, topped off with carrier oil. Roll carefully on child’s temples and back of neck to stimulate senses, soothe head discomforts, and improve focus.

Serenity, aka Restful Blend, combines Lavender, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Hawaiian Sandalwood, and Vanilla Bean. The aroma simply smells like relaxation and helps children fall asleep with more ease… Need I say more?

Usage Tips:
• Add 2 – 3 drops to kid’s bath to reduce restlessness and induce calm.
• Add 4 drops to a diffuser and use in the bedroom during nighttime routine.
• While tucking kids into bed, dilute 1 – 2 drops in lotion or carrier oil and massage on feet and spine to encourage peaceful Zzzzz’s.

Wild Orange, Peppermint, and Serenity will serve you and your kids in many ways. For extra credit, you may also like to try doTERRA’s Kids Collection or the OnGuard Collection for even more fabulous ways to rock the school year.

The Kids Collection includes 6 roller bottles of unique blends that ace the test when it comes to a well-rounded, safe for kids essential oils kit. Each blend was intelligently crafted to help support developing minds, bodies, and emotions. Bonus: the blends are great for 40+ year old kids, too! I love the effectiveness and use them personally on a daily basis.

doTERRA’s OnGuard family has been full of stellar students since the company started in 2008. Inherent to OnGuard’s success is the blend’s impact on the immune system, so you can have a natural, healthy alternative to maintain and support your child’s health. The warm and spicy aroma is great in a diffuser. The OnGuard family is vast – some of my favorites include the 10ml OnGuard Touch, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, beadlets, laundry detergent, and… who am I kidding?! The whole OnGuard family rocks!

Stocking up on these essential school supplies is easy peasy! A kindergartener could do it these days, based on how I see my kids scrolling and clicking around the iPad. Ha!

Going Green – Smells Good Sat, 15 Sep 2018 16:15:52 +0000 By Elizabeth Halliday-Reynolds

Dear Essential Oil Friends,

At one time, those of us that were “going all natural” were considered “crunchy granola”. You and I know better! The all natural trend is firmly entrenched in our society today. Who wants products laden with preservatives, chemicals and stuff that can end up doing so much harm long term. And side effects! Who needs or has time for those.

Sometimes though, those little bottles are a mystery. The great news is that we are finding essential oil based products in understandable and consumable packaging. This means gel caps for internal ingestion, rubs, salves, ointments, tinctures and patches can be just as effective as a few drops in the diffuser or in a home made remedy.

All that is left is – Which Remedy – When – Will it work with me?

Please join me this for essential oil education. New and experienced users are welcome. You will hear science that backs up the use of essential oils for every topic and feel confident that you are getting safe, effective and empowering use guidelines for essential oils and other health products. Consider these study groups as a fun and interactive environment for learning. . Topics can include delivery methods, animal safety, chronic health conditions.

From strictly a scientific standpoint, essential oils are capable of causing physical changes in the body because they are made up of chemical compounds that communicate with the chemistry in our bodies. Within the human body, there are two types of communication systems; electrical and chemical which affect the nervous and endocrine systems. Research shows that the aromatic compounds within the essential oils interact with the endocrine and nervous system, resulting in physical changes within the body. – Danielle Daniel Holistic Psych

DIY Bliss: Sweet Summer Skin Wed, 29 Jun 2016 19:42:06 +0000 Welcome to my first official DIY BLISS Blog! This week I’d like to feature the ability to get Sweet Summer Skin!

This is a DIY spa treatment that you can do in the privacy of your own home, so no one has too see the messy process of creation, application and purification!

This Sweet Summer Skin spa was inspired by SUMMER TIME! And a little help from Taylor Cope behind the desk 🙂

Really what I was feeling, was the peeling skin from my first burn and reminiscing how smooth and buttery my skin felt after my facial with Kaityln Stoner here at Bliss. I wanted to have that buttery feel ALL OVER!

    Get your own facial yummies!

The plan is to make a Salt Scrub, Green Clay Face Mask, and Lotion.

So I gather my ingredients (conveniently from the Bliss shelves) and a few things I already had at home.

    summer skin

Saturday I was all alone and could indulge is all the relaxation and self-love.

I began with the simplest first, Salt Scrub.

In a little bowl I placed my salt, oil and essential oils. I chose grapefruit for it’s relaxing and uplifting qualities, and patchouli for its bug-repelling power. You can swap sugar for the salt or mix them. I chose salt since it’s summer and my skin doesn’t need excess moisturizing.

So I just mixed these three loves together and noticed I wanted more oil (I used the Jojoba since I had it on hand) so I just added a little more until I got the consistency I wanted.

    Salt Scrub

With that done, I took out another small bowl and began the face mask. Also a quick and easy mixture.making mask

I scooped out my clay, a bit of honey, and I used frankincense since I knew that it’s great for skin healing and goodness. If you have a skin that is prone to blackhead or pimples I would recommend Tea Tree as it’s great for “cleaning dirt”.

You can see mine is a bit grainy, so learn from my impatience. Mix mix mix!

I mixed all this in before I added the water. I slowly add water and thoroughly mix and scrape as I go. I may not have used anymore than a 1tbs or so for this mixture. You want a smooth even consistency so when you put it on your face you don’t have chunks.

Scrub and mask done, it was time to face my fears of making lotion.

I has no idea how this would work; if my little blender would be strong enough. So many doubts, but I pushed on. I followed the directions from the blog I got the recipe from. I did change the recipe slightly as I thought it was a little too “waxy” for my desires.

First I mixed the Aloe, Essential oils, and Vitamin E oil.

Then slowly melted the beeswax and Jojoba oil.

You can use any essential oils you have, but since this was to help me with sunburn, I chose the sandalwood and I like the combination with the uplifting tangerine. (FYI: citrus oils will burn if you hang out in the sun too long)

The instructions say to cool the beeswax and jojoba before, and they mean it! Take your time.

After the mixture is cooled ( but not too cool!) Turn on your trusty blender and SLOWLY add the aloe mix.

I would have photographed this process, but I was sure I screwed something up and my heart was breaking. But keep on going folks! You have to do a ton of scrapping of sides, and blending, then more scraping, and so on. The directions say for about 10 minutes, and they mean it!

My mixture looked like a marshmallow goop and water…. and then, like magic (of course), it all came together

    Observe the creamy yummy!

    Observe the creamy yummy!

It looked so good!!! I wanted to eat it, which I could have if I didn’t add the sandalwood oil. (next time!)

With the work done, I went to the garden and got myself sweaty, dirty, and ready for my well-deserved pampering.

I hopped in the shower and got my scrub on! I loved the salty taste as the scrub washed off of me, I felt like I was at the beach! The gorgeous red color and abrasive nature of the salt efficiently washed of all the dirt. Since the essential oils are anti-bacterial and anit-fungal I skipped the soap! The oil left my skin nice and moisturized after I toweled off.

I Painted on the mask with a clean paint brush that I ONLY use for my masks. You can use a spoon, or fingers, or whatever you prefer…

Since the clay dries out you want to be sure to wash it off BEFORE it dries. I washed it when I felt it tightening and drying.

While the face dried I applied the lotion all over and LOVED the way it felt!

Needless to say, I was happy and super smelly after my Sweet Summer Skin self-spa!

No Really What Are You Smelling? 3 Ways To Know You Have The Right Oil For You Sat, 28 May 2016 14:23:42 +0000 Chances are at least one of your friends have mentioned how essential oils have helped them find support for an every day thing….
Could be tummy trouble, difficultly relaxing, sleeping or even occasional clogged airways.

So you start researching and and reading up on ALL the brands out there!

“Oh My!” you say, “there is a lot to this”

    Yes! Yes there is –

IMG_0804Does it Smell good – Simple right! Smell is important. Many of us can TELL immediately that the petroleum based scented wall plug in or the candle shop candle is full of fragrances. Perhaps the scent of this item was based on an essential oil log ago, but then some lab got a hold of the process and tried to pull out the main chemical constituent in order to bring that item to market. Mass production does not mean quality. In fact many report headaches, dizziness, migraine from smelling this stuff. If it does not smell good, don’t use it. When you purchase a 100% pure essential oil, you are looking for the synergistic properties of that plant extracted as an essential oil. This is where you get your therapeutic value.

IMG_0805Is it therapeutic – When I first started looking for oils to offer in our then tiny gift shop, I looked for a grade of essential oil that was labeled “therapeutic”, “100 % Pure”. This label was touted in my massage training as the best way to identify that the bottle was pure. We don’t want additives in our oils. Additives are often used to bring the price down on that individual bottle. Additives may save you a few dollars but additives CAN introduce toxicity. As a certified therapeutic aromatherapist, with years of client success stories, I can confirm that therapeutic value is important. Therapeutic value makes a difference to the treatment. When your essential research indicates that X oil is good for y condition you need every property of a pure oil for that oil to be effective. Purity and potency is key!

IMG_0806Purity + Potency = Quality – Looks like a simple math equation right! As I work with clients wanting to use essential oils therapeutically, I have found that some brands just did not deliver the results for my clients. As I became certified, I also learned that NOT ALL oil companies did extensive 3rd party testing. Some companies do a little testing. Some won’t, claiming that they know the farmer and the distiller. Sweet! All good, but serious aromatherapists know that changes in the climate, pesticides in adjacent fields, time to the distillery, part of the plant distilled all impact chemistry and this is what impacts therapeutic value. 3rd party testing is going to:

    • Ensure that the product was not made in a lab (wintergreen oils is super easy to fool most lab tests).
    • Ensure that the chemistry supports all the historical use models (this is where therapeutic value is intended not as a sales tool – no testing = empty promises).
    • Ensure that no chemicals were add during distillation/extraction process to get a better yield.

Have a question about which essential oil is best for you? Elizabeth loves to get your e-mails and does schedule privately for aromatherapy consults. You can reach her at

Remember 3 these three criteria when choosing an oil: Does it smell good, is it therapeutic grade, was it tested.
